so let us dance

Installation piece in “Unfashionable,” for PULSE NYC, currated by Jayson Thompson and Xandra Beverlin.

Is that all there is to it, so let us dance is about the objects and images that the body holds and the power of movement as a force of illumination and healing. It was largely inspired by the research from the book “The Body Keeps Score” and my own experiences as a 14 year old working in the fashion industry. Utilizing wire, neon lighting, personal archival materials, and video, I sought to create a claustrophobic and sickly space holding questions about industry, measurement, stuckness, and healing.

When I was 12 years old, I was braced for scoliosis. I wore my brace everyday until I was scounted for modeling and sent to Japan to work at the age of 14. This was a time of immense shame of my body and hiding the way it naturally moved. I would think about ways to stand and how to dress in order to hide my scoliosis. It was a strange transition from feeling stuck and confined within my brace, to having my movements controlled by aesthetic confines.

In this piece, I wanted viewers to observe and feel the stuckness and emptiness of the figure, in contrast to the free movement of my current body dancing in the video projections. I see this piece as a continuation of :mycoremediation,” my senior thesis exhibition.
